I had a cat that was diagnosed with feline leukemia and died shortly after about a month and a half ago. Just today we adopted a new kitten. 7 weeks old. I was wondering what the odds are of her catching the disease. We threw out everything from the sick kitty and we bought all new stuff. We shampooed the carpet downstairs and we wiped everything down with clorox wipes. So what are the odds of her catching it. After looking around, I learned — I work at a vet clinic and the virus doesn't last very long in the environment (usually less than 48 hours). I would suggest though that if the kitten hasn't been tested, you get her tested now and again at 3-6 months (it can take 3 months for the virus to show up on the tests after exposure). Also, I would also suggest that atleast for the first few years you vaccinated for FLV – and for a very long time if it's an indoor/outdoor cat. Anyway – I'm very sorry for your loss – that had to be very hard. Congrats though on your new kitten.
